PrEP (Pre-exposure Prophylaxis) is an antiretroviral medication taken by Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)-negative individuals before engaging in activities that may expose them to HIV. It prevents HIV by stopping the virus from replicating.
People living with HIV (PLHIV) in Bhutan often face social isolation, discrimination, and violence, which deter vulnerable groups from getting tested and contribute to the spread and progression of the disease, a study has found.
Of the 32 people, who tested positive for HIV in the last six months, three are from the religious body, 11 are housewives, five each from private sector, business community, driver, and farmers.
Bhutan is already geared up to achieve the national goal of ending HIV endemic by 2030.
